SET DESIGNER / TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION

The designer/tech director position at CLOC is a very difficult one.  The sheer physical and logistical problem of designing and building nine musicals in nine weeks can seem overwhelming.  Nevertheless we have been doing it for 32 years and doing it quite successfully.  The designer must design in a manner best described as "simple, but effective."  He or she must then execute those designs with a crew of six undergraduates.  The job requires ingenuity and total devotion to the theatre.  It is also an excellent way for a young designer to gain practical experience and to add nine full stage shows to his or her portfolio in a short amount of time.

We normally seek a person in this position who has had a great deal of undergraduate experience in designing and tech directing and who is currently enrolled in or finished with graduate school.  There is not a separate lighting designer.  We have had successful undergraduates in this position as well as college faculty members.  The ability to organize well and to be an effective crew leader are essential.

The normal working day is 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2:00-5:30 p.m. and a shift during performance.  The crew also runs the show in the evening.  Wednesday is the crew day off (until the evening performance). Weekends through Tuesday opening tend to be more hectic.  The designer must be at tech and dress  but otherwise can be free evenings.  Budget is approximately $900 per show.

Should you wish to apply for this position you will need to complete the formal application form and indicate the possibility of an interview in Oberlin or New York  We hope you will consider carefully your own methods of work and make sure you think you can fit into our pattern successfully.  It is difficult and demanding work requiring long hours, patience, ingenuity, and creativity.  The artistic rewards are great, however, and it is interesting to note that in all our years in Falmouth we have never had a designer who did not reapply for a second season.  The position pays room and board and a stipend.  Please call the number below or e-mail Bob.Haslun@Oberlin.edu for the amount of the stipend.  Employment dates for 2003 are June 7 - August 23.
