Falmouth, MA

Associate Conductor
JOB DESCRIPTION

The Associate Conductors (there are two) serve as Chorus Master and Lead Coach. They generally alternate so that one does the chorus one week and the principals the next. Usually, depending on inclination, ability, and experience, one or both of the Associate Conductors conduct matinee performances.

General Rehearsal hours are 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 - 5:30 p.m. While evenings are free, they are the only time for Associate Conductors to learn music for upcoming shows.

Successful candidates are generally graduate students or upperclass undergraduates with a solid background in coaching and choral conducting. They must be able to play the piano well enough to coach without an accompanist.

In a normal week, Tuesday marks the start of rehearsals for the next show. Tuesday is given over to the music staff and the entire score must be learned on that day. Wednesday is given over to blocking rehearsals and an associate conductor and accompanist are assigned to each rehearsal. Thursday morning continues with blocking. Thursday afternoon is the matinee. Friday morning finishes blocking and on Friday afternoon we begin a "stagger-through" of the show which continues on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon the vocal company and the orchestra get together for a sitzprobe. Sunday morning is free (although there is a music staff meeting late in the morning to go over tempi and cuts for the next week's rehearsals). Sunday afternoon there is a run-through of the show with piano and Sunday evening a tech rehearsal with piano. Monday is touch up day and Monday evening is a formal dress rehearsal. Tuesday the cycle starts all over again.

The position pays room and board and a stipend.  Please call the number below or e-mail Bob.Haslun@Oberlin.edu for the amount of the stipend.  Employment dates for 2003 are June 7 - August 23.
