Applications to the
College Light Opera Company should be made as early as possible. Our first
round of decisions for admission into the company is on March 15.
At that time current applicants are notified of their acceptance or rejection.
In some cases we ask the applicant to be wait-listed for several weeks.
Applications received after March 15 are screened weekly if
positions are still available. Our experience has been that some positions
remain open as late as May 15. However, the best chance of
admission is at the March 15 session. Applicants must
complete the formal application which may be downloaded,
printed and mailed. All applicants must also submit two letters of
recommendation from people qualified to speak for the type of position for
which the applicant is applying. It is the applicant's responsibility that
these references reach the Producers.
Recommendation letters may be sent separately by the
recommenders or included with the application.
Recommenders may also send recommendations via e-mail to CLOC@Oberlin.net.
Applications lacking reference letters
or tapes (if required in the applicant's field) cannot be considered for
employment. Those with questions about the status of their applications or
about the availability of certain positions may call
440-774-8485
evenings before 10:00 p.m.
All application materials must be sent to:
162 S. Cedar St., Oberlin, OH 44074
not to the Falmouth summer address.
Those applying for the
vocal ensemble, the orchestra, or as piano accompanists must submit an
audition on audio tape or CD in addition to the application form and letters of
recommendation. The audition material for singers should include two
contrasting selections from the light opera repertoire and two from musical
comedy. Ideally, one of the light opera selections should be from the Gilbert
and Sullivan repertoire and the other should reveal the vocal technique,
range, and dynamic and interpretive powers of the voice. If the applicant has
a "belt" voice, he or she should show it in one of the Broadway
selections. A short monologue demonstrating flexibility of voice and the
dramatic range of the acting should also be included. It is not of value to
include material in a foreign language or from grand opera. One verse of each
song is sufficient.
The audition tape or CD for
orchestra and accompanist applicants should show the level of competence and
virtuosity attained on the instrument. Specific materials should be chosen by
the applicant and may include a recital tape or CD.
When making
the audition recording the applicant is urged to secure as good a quality reproduction as
possible. Audio cassette tapes or CDs are to be used. It is mandatory that singers
use accompanists. At the beginning of the tape the name of the performer and
the selections to follow should be announced. Audition material will not be
returned unless accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope of adequate
size. Recorded material should be sent in such a manner as not to require a signature upon
delivery.
